John Hillcoat, director of Aussie western The Proposition and bleaker than bleak post-apocalyptic muser The Road, has collaborated with Rockstar to bring you a 29-minute edit of the opening hours of Red Dead Redemption, cut together solely using the game engine and ready-made cut-scenes (albeit touched up to look silky-smooth).
While that might not sound particularly interesting if you've already played the game, Hillcoat has managed to create an interesting short film using existing assets, adding a few new camera angles and beautifully framed compositions that perfectly capture Red Dead's unique realisation of the wild west.
It's purely worth watching for the final minutes, as Marston stalks through Ridgewood Farm and the camera slowly follows him up the stairs as he follows a blood trail. Pretty tense stuff.
The short film follows the opening events of Red Dead Redemption as John Marston tracks down Bill Williamson, so be forewarned - if you've yet to play the first few hours of Redemption, there are more than a few spoilers.
