The RIAA, you know those bastards who sue people for downloading music "illegally", are actually operating at a net loss.
For years people have been massively download millions of songs a day, for free, in what some might say is illegal. Despite your opinions on whether you think file-sharing is justifiable or not, the actions the RIAA take are very illegal! They have broken countless laws to get what they want. There is a class action suit against them for Rico because they are such a criminal organization. There have been several instances in the past where they have sued innocent people for hundreds of thousands of dollars and obviously lost in court because they had nothing to go on, but anyways there are many claims they take up with people and do win. If you're reading this right now, then im sure you have "illegally" downloaded music at one point or another.
Why do they do this and harass hundreds of people for money that they wouldn't have even given the music industry anyways. Obviously its just to fatten the record companies pockets. Its not like the musicians see any of this settlement money. Well now the financial facts are in, and here they are.
In 2008, the RIAA paid law firms Holmes Roberts and Owens, Jenner and Block, and Cravath Swain and Moore a combined total of $17.6 million. Thats a pretty hefty legal fee, so you would imagine they received at-least somewhere near $100 million in settlement money. However the truth is they only received a mere $391,000 from their legal actions. From 2006 to 2008, the RIAA spent aprox. $64 million to get back $1.36 million. It would seem like the RIAA is a lost cause and does no good for anyone, except keeping those lawyers healthily employed.
