I swear everything now is zombie this or zombie that.. Be it the Movies, Video Games, or just someones plan for the post apocalyptic world. Not that im complaining, i love zombies, they make everything just that much better.
In the digital medium they're usually a slow dim witted AI (Artificial Intelligence) only interested in one thing... Brains..."I'm going to eat your brains and gain your knowledge". So outsmarting them is not the challenge, its not what makes the zombie modes fun, its defeating the endless hordes of easy kills that come in almost one at a time. "Boom, headshot".
Theres also that part of you inside that kind of wishes that 2012 will be an apocalypse and there will be zombies walking the streets and you will have your trusty shotty, becuase who wants the world to go out by an asteroid or something lame like that, wheres the fun in that. There are only two ways the world should die (from a gamers perspective)... Zombie apocalypse or Alien Invasion. the latter being way more unrealistic because what alien species that has the technology to travel to this planet wouldnt have superior weapons that would leave us without a chance. But then again, were talking about zombies and aliens here, so i guess anything could potentially be possible. If zombies did rule the world one day and behaved as they should based on what we know from movies and games despite certain descrepencies here and there; i would be in heaven. No joke, it would be a dream come true and if i fell to the undead, i would go out with a big smile on my face.
My only gripe with this is that these game developers, are so uncreative that they cant come up with something a little different. Why not have ninjas, pirates, vampires, or hell... sharks with fricken lasers on their heads. It doesn't take much to be new and innovative and if you do it right, it will be extremely rewarding. Alan Wake is a perfect example, they use the concept of zombies, but not in the traditional undead search for brains. They play out the old original meaning of a zombie, which is from Voodoo, where someone, usually a witch doctor or wizard, places a spell on someone to take control of them and make them do what ever they want. They use these zombies aka the Taken, to portray the light vs dark theme.
I understand why they use zombies, its easy money. Its something thats been proven over and over again... Zombies sell.. It doesn't matter if its Halloween or not, people buy into zombies like the plague. You could spend hundreds of dollars on Amazon right now just on reading material for zombie apocalypse survival guides. While i welcome zombies into every facet of life, it is starting to feel a little played out with how much its been showing up. I mean whats next, zombie branded Mountain Dew, or a zombie edition Toyota Camry. We obviously have a plethora of zombie specific games like Left 4 Dead, and add on modes to games like Call of Duty - World at War, which made the game dare i say only worth it because of the zombie mode. However when certain games like Naughty Bear, a game about a stuffed bear gone bad, puts zombies into its story, it just feels out of place. Rockstar just annouced a DLC for Red Dead Redemption coming out later this year, maybe early next year, that will feature a zombie mode. yeah a zombie mode in a western shooter, come on now, does everything have to have zombies these days? Maybe the answer is yes, maybe we're all slowly turning into zombies by this influx of zombie media.
